Maersk Oil was established in 1962, when Mr A.P. Møller was awarded the concession for oil and gas exploration and production in Denmark.

Today, Maersk Oil is a midsize international oil and gas company operating an oil production of about 650,000 barrels per day and a sales gas production of up to some 1,000 million cubic feet per day. Innovative application of advanced seismic processing techniques as part of a comprehensive state-of-the-art reservoir characterization, combined with ultra long horizontal drilling (up to 12 kilometres) as well as Maersk Oil’s completion and stimulation technology of the horizontal wells, have been the key to the technical success in developing these chalk fields. In addition, attention to health and safety, a strong respect for the environment and a cost conscious operation has made Maersk Oil grow to become one of the world's top 25 independent oil and gas producing companies. It is Maersk Oil's strategic intent to continue this growth. The company believes that this can be achieved by fully utilizing the potential of existing production areas and establishing and growing material business in new areas.
