The use of offshore locations holds great potential for the switch to renewable energies, as wind has a higher availability here. With long transportation routes to land, it would be conceivable to produce PtX products offshore. However, there is currently a lack of technical analysis and detailed cost calculations for these applications.

As a master student in our team, you will play a crucial role in the techno-economic analysis (TEA) of the Power-to-MeOH plant being built on an offshore platform. The main product is the fluctuating electricity from the offshore wind turbine, which is used for H2 generation by proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer. The fluctuation makes H2 not always available for MeOH production. In this case, an operating strategy for the offshore plant is necessary. In addition, the technical suitability for partial load operation (30 %, 50 %, and 70 %) will be investigated. The plant will be modeled in a process simulation software and the simulation results form the basis for the calculation.

This role involves conducting a comprehensive process simulation to analyze this innovative technology techno-economically. In addition, sensitivity analyses of some technical design variables on techno-economic results will be carried out.

  • - Prior knowledge in process simulation software (Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, AVEVA Process Simulation, ChemCAD, gProms, UniSim, etc.)
  • prior knowledge in TEA
  • knowledge in electrolysis technology is desired
  • knowledge in Power-to-X concepts is desired
  • excellent German and English language skills (in speaking and writing)
  • good communication skills, independent way of working, self-initiative
