Studien-/ Abschlussarbeit Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute for Solar Research in Stuttgart we are looking for Master student engineering mechanical, energy, chemical or similar (f/m/x) Simulation and post-processing of particle flow in the centrifugal particle solar receiver What to expect: Start your career with an interesting master thesis at DLR Solar Research Institute, one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of concentrating solar technology!
The department "Concentrating Solar Technology" of the Institute of Solar Research deals with the development and optimization of components for solar thermal systems, especially solar receivers. In the group "Particle Systems", receiver systems are developed and tested in cooperation with industrial partners, using ceramic particles as innovative heat transfer and storage media to be used in a temperature range up to 1000°C.
Your role in the group will be to develop the simulation models of the innovative Centrifugal Solar Particle Receiver (CentRec) and evaluate the results. You will be using Discrete Element Method (DEM)-based open source simulation tool to investigate the effect of rough receiver wall on the bulk particle behavior. You will start your work with the calibration of the simulation model with the available experiment results. Later, you will analyze laser measurements of receiver wall, and create its simplified CAD model. You will develop a post processing routine in a relevant tool (Paraview, Matlab or similar) to calculate the velocity field of particles in the receiver. The results of this study will be used in the creation of Digital Twin of CentRec in the near future. You can find more detail about CentRec here: https://www.dlr.de/sf/en/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-10436/22288_read-51974/
You can gain valuable experience about simulation model development and post processing in this master thesis study, and can play a big role in the development of an innovative solar thermal technology.
