The safety and security of critical infrastructures is an essential foundation for the economic

prosperity and stability of governments and societies. The research groups of the Department of Maritime Security Technologies are dedicated to solving a wide range of technological issues required for the implementation and testing of innovative system concepts for the protection of maritime infrastructures. These include the development and demonstration of novel instruments and system functions that are capable of recording, evaluating and visualising the protection status of maritime infrastructures in real time and in a largely automated manner.

One focus of the Methods and Processing Group is the processing and analysis of image data from optical cameras for the exploration of maritime regions to detect and assess the situation above water.

As part of your master thesis, you will develop an experimental setup for testing an existing, simulation-based 3D-reconstruction pipeline for maritime objects. In cooperation with the team you will implement a calibrated, virtual version of the experimental setup and use it to verify experimental data. Core aspects are the quantitative analysis of the performance of the 3D-reconstruction pipeline in a physical environment and identification of areas for further development. The physical simulation of weather and lighting as well as optimization of stereoscopic camera parameters are also required.

The main tasks will be:

  • development, setup and execution of experiments for testing an existing 3D-reconstruction pipeline
  • verification of experiments in a virtual environment and comparison of simulated and experimental data
  • experimental optimization study to optimize the 3D-reconstruction pipeline

The scientific results of your master thesis will have the possibility to be followed by a publication in a conference or journal.

  • final year of a master’s degree in natural sciences, computer science or engineering
  • programming skills in e.g. C++ or Python as well as first experience with optical sensor systems
  • eager to work hands on in a laboratory environment is a plus
  • knowledge of 3D computer graphics and Blender are an advantage
  • fluency in written and spoken English preferred

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
