Background: Rolls-Royce Dahlewitz operates a set of machine tools within its final aero-engine assembly process. In order to manage a load increase the Rolls-Royce Manufacturing Engineering team seeks to pursue an algorithm-based solution that automatically schedules tasks on these machines to minimize planning efforts and to maximise productivity. Within this research we would like the compare the performance of the current scheduling approach, with an approach based on standard-hours and an approach which schedules tasks based on previous performance data. Key accountabilities: Model the machine scheduling task Propose a suitable scheduling and rescheduling algorithm Implement and verify algorithm Integrate manual and sensor based input information in algorithm Provide a user-interface for a proof of concept (minimum viable product) Qualifications: Master student – final thesis (Engineering, Computer Science or similar) Operations research prefered background Lean management awareness preferred Ability to communicate accross the layers of a large organisation Proficiency in web application development with modern development stacks as well as Python and SQL language Fluency in German (speaking) Fluency in English (speaking) Pioneer the performance of the future.
