DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a global collaboration involving over 250 international research groups. As one of the largest groups in the collaboration, the DESY CMS group is currently seeking to hire an additional PhD student to strengthen the team. The group is active in data analysis focusing on QCD and heavy flavour production, top, jet, W/Z and Higgs production, as weil as multiple searches for new physics. In addition, the group is involved in the construction of the Tracker and Calorimeter for the phase 2 upgrade, in luminosity measurements, as weil as in various performance optimisation and calibration activities, and in shifts for the detector operation. The PhD position is based at DESY Hamburg, in combination with an affiliation to a University, e.g. the University of Hamburg.
- Analysis of CMS Run 2 and ongoing Run 3 data with focus on charm and beauty production and fragmentation
- This involves both contributions to the completion of a forthcoming CMS publication, as weil as generating further new breakthrough measurements for a better understanding of charm and beauty fragmentation nonuniversality, and the related differential and total cross sections
- Optionally, contributions to charm and beauty fragmentation phenomenology studies in collaboration with the DESY and Hamburg University theory groups, for the understanding and interpretation of these measurements, including aspects relevant for future determinations of the charm/beauty Higgs Yukawa couplings
- Service task: Contributions to the tracker alignment group and the tracking performance group
- Contributions to data taking and production (shifts)
- Participation in schools and presentations at international workshops and conferences
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us.
