DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.
Scientific computing contributes significantly to the CO2 footprint created by research conducted in ErUM (Exploration of Universe and Matter). In order to advance the environmental sustainability in this area the SUSFECIT (Sustainable Federated Compute Infrastructures) research network has been proposed with the goal to contribute to developing a strategy and interlinked software ecosystems to reduce the CO2 footprint and to increase the energy efficiency of distributed computing resources. The basic idea is to exploit the dispatchability of compute jobs in space and time and use the partition of a federated computing infrastructure at a place, which at a certain time, is (dominantly) powered by renewable energies such as from wind turbines and solar power plants.
Together with project partners and stakeholders from a larger collaboration, the successful candidate will investigate, analyse and design energy and compute load profiles together with the scientific partners of the ErUM community. Additionally, development and testing of a digital twin (simulation) including the integration of additional research data centers of the partners and usage in a Germany-wide federated computing model needs to be done. In this context forecasting models need to be integrated and optimized for usage in this interlinked ecosystem. This should result in drafting of an implementation plan with local users and ErUM partners. Finally tutorials for the creation of awareness and education of scientists need to be created.
- Investigation, analysis and design of energy and compute load profiles
- Development and testing of a digital twin and integration into the interlinked ecosystems
- Development of forecasting models for load and power profiles
- Drafting of an implementation plan
- Writing of tutorials for education of scientists
- Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
- Publication and presentation of research results
Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.
