Course paper/final thesis Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place! For our Institute of Communications and Navigation in Oberpfaffenhofen we are looking for a Student Engineering, Physics, Information Technology or similar (f/m/x) Breadboard for the attitude control of multiple laser communication terminals on a common platform What to expect: Over the past few years, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has developed several small laser communication terminals (LCTs). These range from the smallest commercially available CubeLCT, which has a size of 0.3U in the CubeSat standard, to 1U+ sized terminals with hemispherical pointing capabilities.
Trending developments highlight the use of LCTs in satellite or high-altitude platform constellations. Therefore, algorithms capable of handling multiple LCTs simultaneously are required to enable high-performance interconnections, such as optical inter-satellite links for data exchange.
The aim of this thesis is to build a hardware breadboard to validate attitude control algorithms that steer two or more LCTs towards dedicated reference beacon signals simultaneously. One of the main tasks of the thesis will be to implement software that controls motorized attitude manipulation platforms to simulate dynamic orbit scenarios. Closely related is the choice of breadboard components that fulfill the testing requirements. Another task involves automating the breadboard test plan in Python, based on existing code. The final breadboard shall allow validation of the functionality of the involved algorithms and benchmark their performance.
