The DLR’s Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics is working on the utilization of technologies of energy conversion that are efficient and accommodating on resources as well as on the accelerated utilization of renewable energies. Within this context the Department of Energy System Integration at Stuttgart, Germany, invites applicants from all over the world to work with us.

The Electrochemical High Temperature Processes group investigate how to scale up processes utilizing Solid Oxide Cell (SOC) reactors from the laboratory scale to multi-MW plants through experimental and modelling activities. With these activities we look into both possible operating modes for SOCs, the fuel cell mode (SOFC) as well as the electrolysis mode (SOEC). And these activities are split into 4 interconnecting pillars: Concepting; Reactor Experimental Investigations; Transient System Simulations; and Process System Scale Experiments. Our work spans several engineering disciplines from chemical/process engineering to mechanical, electrical engineering as well as software engineering. These disciplines are reflected in the tools we use to progress our vision for this technology, from our in-house modelling tools TEMPEST and CELESTE written in Modelica and Python to our one of a kind testrigs HORST and GALACTICA and our currently in-development container module e-Xplore

We are looking for highly motivated and capable students of various engineering disciplines to help us achieve our goals to push this technology to the next level. You will be working on real-world relevant projects suited to your goals to develop your engineering skills. Some key topics we are currently working on:

  • experimental investigation of using SOFCs in cruise ships
  • transient operating and control strategies for renewable powered SOEC plants for hydrogen production
  • Process design of containerised and pressurized high temperature electrolyser module
  • conceptual design of renewable powered ammonia plant


  • working towards Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Mechanical/Chemical/Electrical Engineering or similar (currently enrolled)
  • strong grasp of Thermodynamics and Engineering First principles (i.e. Mass and Energy Balances)
  • strong research skills and ability to work independently
  • Experience in mathematical modelling and optimisation is advantageous
  • Proficiency in a programming language is advantageous (i.e. Python, MATLAB, C++, etc.)
  • fluently in English and/or German
