    What we do

    The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and at the same time promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

    Hospital Care Program Coordinator


    As part of the Health Unit, and within Hospital Care Service (HCP) program, the Anaesthetist HQ Specialist 2 provides guidance and technical support to field teams in developing, implementing and monitoring programmes and projects in his/her area if responsibility and expertise. S/he contribute to developing and implementing relevant anaesthesia guidelines/protocols and organizing training in their use. S/he ensures quality care through the implementation of ICRC standards of care. S/he actively contributes to institutional technical files such as War Surgery Seminar and if required provides input/support for Emergency room training (ERTC) and Basic Emergency course (BEC) and Mass casualty.


    The HQ Anaesthetist role is fundamental to the good functioning of the Hospital Team by ensuring the delivery of safe anaesthesia and perioperative care to patients in the ICRC Hospital projects. As the title suggests, this role requires a senior, ICRC experienced doctor leader with a confirmed background in anaesthesia and critical care medicine. There is a strong teaching and mentoring element to the role to promote the transfer and exchange of knowledge and skills to resident staff and more junior mobile staff. Leadership skills and excellent communication skills are also required to ensure cohesion and close collaboration within the surgical team leading to the promotion of best practice in patient care.

    The person undertaking this role must be solution-orientated, resourceful and able to work autonomously within the realm of anaesthesia/critical care medicine.

    General duties

    • Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
    • May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary
    Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

    • Together with the HCP colleagues, supports the planning, implementation and monitors the progress of ICRC hospital projects in the field, assesses programmes' performance, ensures alignment with health/institutional strategies and objectives and reports on results.
    • Provides technical support to field programmes from Headquarters or via field visits in close coordination with relevant Programme Coordinator/Health Coordinator.
    • Ensures the quality of service delivery by actively developing, updating and promoting standards of care and the application of ICRC guidelines and processes.
    • Contributes to strategic management of the programme/project and helps develop technical content.
    • Contributes to human resources management in his/her area of expertise. His includes briefings, debriefings and support for recruitment and pool management.
    • Participates in building up a relevant pool of ICRC anaesthetists and budgeting and planning exercises.
    • Represents the programme in internal and external fora as required.
    • Acts as focal point for institutional Anaesthesia/Critical care related topics
    • Co-Coordinates and supports training such as War Surgery Seminar to internal and external staff and globally when required.
    • Develops and maintains relevant anesthesia networks aimed at strengthening ICRC’s capacity building and operational outcomes.
    People management responsibilities




    • Internally, interacts with members of the Hospital Care Programme, regional NAME anaesthetist, Head of Sectors, Health Coordinators, Anaesthetists ,when required other hospital team field members and Hospital Project Managers, and, other ICRC departments as necessary.
    • Externally, interacts with academic contacts, international organisations and relevant clinical
    Additional duties

    • Collects and shares information so as to improve the ICRC’s understanding of the environment and humanitarian trends and responses
    • Represents the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and in the field, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image
    • Takes responsibility for their own professional learning and development
    Certifications / Education required

    • Degree in Medicine and advanced specialization in anaesthesiology with a valid medical license.
    • Training in public health or health management an asset.
    • Fluent command of English and French both oral and written. Other languages of interest to the ICRC a strong asset.
    Professional Experience required

    • Typically, 10+ years of clinical experience, including 7 years in anaesthesiology
    • Solid experience in implementing/leading humanitarian programmes, ICRC field experience a strong asset
    • Proven ability to lead multi-cultural teams and to effectively transfer knowledge and build capacity
