    The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures aims at the stable supply of society. The development of methods for detecting and defending against threats is just as much a part of the tasks as improved management in the event of major emergencies. In the department "Digital Twins for Infrastructures", complex networked supply systems, socio-technical interrelationships as well as buildings and technical facilities are modeled and simulated in terms of structure and behavior. By tracking the models with real-time data and providing intelligent tools for crisis teams and emergency forces, digital twins are created that provide new possibilities for monitoring and responding to crises. They also provide a basis for analyzing and optimizing the resilience of terrestrial infrastructures.

    Your mission is to model dynamic water demands in urban areas during normal operations and for crisis situations.

    This includes the following responsibilities:

    • development of scenarios that impact the water needs of the population
    • modeling of water demands for different scenarios on the basis of analyses and assessments of the state of the art in the described subject area as well as on own research work
    • integration into an Urban Digital Twin and ensuring the runnability of the models in simulations; verification and validation of the models you created compared to the current state of the art
    • processing data you use according to the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) to enable collaborative data use
    • software implementation and integration of the models you develop (software engineering)
    • publication of your results in journals and at international conferences

    You will contribute to a research project that deals with the resilience of critical infrastructures of cities. You participate in developing methods, especially using digital twins, to improve the handling of crises in all phases in current and past damage situations.  The knowledge gained during crisis situations will be used to harden urban infrastructures and to develop procedures to prevent future crises. To this end, the focus is particularly on modeling and analyzing interdependencies in complex sociotechnical urban spaces.

    You will implement your ideas in a dynamic and innovative institute in cooperation with the Chair of Fluid Systems at the TU Darmstadt. You can expect an advanced team spirit, excellent infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment and current development environments.     • university degree (master's/diploma) in an engineering field (e.g. mechanical or electrical engineering) or a natural science field (e.g. mathematics, physics, computer science)
    • willingness to do a PhD thesis
    • very good knowledge in:cybernetics, agent based modeling and simulation, discrete mathematics, data-driven modeling and artificial intelligence
    • good programming skills, preferably in C/C++, Python, or Matlab
    • independent and result-oriented way of working
    • openness for interdisciplinary approaches
    • very good communication and cooperation skills as well as the ability to work in a team
    • very good knowledge of the German and English language, both written and spoken
    • practical experience in the use of development processes for software development desirable
    • experience in agile working methods desirable
