For our office in Amsterdam we are looking for an enthusiastic Intern for the duration of at least 5 months within our Transaction & Position Management Team. You can start directly if that fits your schedule.
The department Transaction & Position Management is responsible for the processes and systems that manage the Sales and Asset Positions in the Trade system. This includes booking the long term forecast of the sales position into the trading system and processing the measurement data from the grid operators . The team consists of 12 qualified people spread between the locations Amsterdam and Hamburg.
The department Transaction & Position Management is part of the Business Area Markets. Markets is the location where all asset optimisation and trading activities are centralised for the Vattenfall Group. We are located in multiple sites in Europe with more than 500 professionals in Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark. We trade the full range of energy commodities such as electricity, gas, oil, coal, freight and emissions and take responsibility for a diversified sourcing of power, fuels and carbon credits. We optimize and hedge Vattenfall’s generation assets in order to manage risk efficiently and optimize the portfolio value.
Main tasks and responsibilities
As an intern you will be become part of our international team and will work on topics to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the team. At this moment there are multiple assignments possible in the team, which are further described below. In all assignments you will be guided by either the team manager or a senior analyst.
1. Automatize operational shift using Robotic Process Automation
The majority of the operational work in the team is centralized in what we call the operational shift. All tasks in this shift are repetitive, stable and fully documented, but are still done using human interaction due to various reasons such as sanity check, system interaction, etc. In 2017 we started an initiative to introduce Robotic Process Automation (RPA) into the team, meaning to replace manual repetitive work by automated solutions. The goal of this assignment is to research the potential of RPA in the team and to build the software based robotic processes with the aim to fully automatize our operational shift.
2. Process optimization
We are heavy users of processes, systems, workflows, etc, and while many of those have been used for years and have been subject for improvement, there are many gains still possible. We are actively seeking for someone with a fresh and critical view, who will not accept that a process runs in a way because “that’s how it’s always been done”. We are used to our processes, and also used to the flaws in it, but you are not. Your task will be to critically look through all processes in the team and suggest and implement changes and improvements.
3. Your idea!

- Living and studying in the Netherlands – you have to be registered at a Dutch educational institution
- Fluent in English;
- Relevant quantitative Masters discipline: econometrics, mathematics, physics or similar;
- Relevant software knowledge (Excel, programming skills are beneficial);
- Good communication skills;
- Able to work independently but assertive to ask for help;
- Pro-active attitude with a drive to improve.
