Interactive Visualization of CFD data in Augmented Reality
In DLR’s Institute of Software Technology, a team is working on developing applications for visualization of CFD simulation data in augmented reality. In this context, a system has to be designed that not only offers different kinds of AR visualizations of high-fidelity volumetric data but also allows filtering of information from the data. Furthermore, the system must also be able to visualize animations of the CFD simulations. One solution is to develop a standalone CFD data visualization application for AR, but due to limited processing power of the AR headsets, this solution will not be scalable to large datasets. Therefore, a solution is required that either allows sampling of data for the required visualization or remotely renders the data on the AR headset. In the scope of this thesis an application for transfer and rendering of CFD data between a PC and an AR headset is to be developed. An automated pipeline encompassing data sampling, color-coding, visualization and animation needs to be developed. Based on the dataset, on-device rendering or remote rendering must be employed. Besides visualization, the data should be interactable in real time employing intuitive 3D interaction techniques.
