    The department "Solar High Temperature Technologies" of the Institute of Solar Research deals with the development and optimization of components for solar thermal systems, especially receivers. In the group "Particle Systems", receiver systems are developed and tested in cooperation with industrial partners, using ceramic particles as innovative heat transfer and storage media to be used in a temperature range up to 1000°C.

    Together with the colleagues from the Particle group you would need to design and conduct experiments for the calibration of the properties of sand-like ceramic particles. The results will be used in the Discrete Element Method (DEM)-based numerical model of innovative Centrifugal Solar Particle Receiver (CentRec). The particle properties like friction coefficient and rolling resistance are important parameters for the bulk flowability of granular materials. The main objective of the study is to design and run some calibration experiments and running the DEM-simulations in parallel to replicate the experiments in a simulation environment.

    Work Content:

    • literature review of DEM particle property calibration experiments
    • conceptual design and manufacturing of simple experimental test set-ups
    • conducting particle experiments and analyzing the data
    • running DEM simulations and replicate the experiments in a simulation environment
    • post-processing the raw experimental and simulation data, reporting the results
    • studies of mechanical engineering, energy engineering, process engineering or similar
    • hands-on experience or strong interest in basic manufacturing processes like assembling etc. and practical skills for testing
    • data analysis skills, e.g. Matlab, Python, Paraview or other
    • creativity and ability to do brain storming
    • interest in Concentrated Solar Power Systems
    • good communication skills in English, especially in speaking and writing
