    Your mission:
One of the corner stones of the Galileo Competence Centre is the suitability analyses of future technologies for use in the frame of next generations of GNSS. The main goal is to provide a sound suggestion for improving the system. This can either be an enhancement within the ground or space segment and be of local or global effect.
This task requires a feasibility analyses of technologies in relation to the needs of GNSS. Once the decision for development or procurements has been made, all necessary requirements and tools shall be defined and collected to develop a prototype. Such shall aid as proof of concept and enable further development. After suitable testing of the prototype a flight model shall be created, which shall demonstrate the capabilities in space, taking the conditions and demands into account.

The department of technology transfer and implementation is responsible for the part of technical realization, verification and validation of such projects. Along the way a make or buy analyses and decision has to be made. Once concluded suitable test campaigns have to be conducted jointly with partners from other DLR institutes or industry in the laboratory to reach a qualification status for space.

The task comprises specification, design, make or buy of elements, needed for integration and testing. Comprehensive documentation for all steps along the process shall be generated as proof of readiness and enable further tests in space.

Such projects for flight hard- and/or software usually finish with successful demonstration in space and evaluation of results against mission goals and other pre-defined requirements. As the department technology transfer and implementation is interleaved with other departments and one internal entity along the project, inputs and outputs of other departments need to be considered.

One other aspect are analyses of already existing technologies, enhancements for space elements. Such new concepts require a demonstration within GNSS context. This does not need to materialize in real prototypes and can also be conducted in the form of studies, concepts or papers.

Conceptual development of space qualified prototypes
    • experimental development of new, complex flight hardware and related qualification thereof. Innovative ideas considering state of the art scientific development and project related needs, concepts turning theory into real hardware to be provided, feasibility of different approaches to be evaluated and open scientific questions for later in-orbit use to be addressed
    • definition of electrical requirements to the system, e.g. requirements to formulate so called ICDs (Interface Control Documents), SCOE (Satellite Check-Out Equipment) and EMC-Tests (electromagnetic compatibility)
    • definition and specification of defining parameters and continuous adaptation, based on laboratory results, which shall be interpreted in relation to the mission goals
    • conceptual shaping and analyses of short- and long-term test campaigns and test cases, including risk analyses in case of negative or deviating test results with respect to pass criteria. Such decisions are influencing the wider goals of GKs projects and are vital for their forthcoming and success.
    • definition and coordination of interfaces, modelling of on-board software and related interfaces by use of C/C++/Python/MATLAB. This will be an interdisciplinary task jointly conducted with other groups internal and external of GK
    • planning and self-dependent decision making for required laboratory equipment under consideration of DLR processes as well as available budget and time.
    • participation to project and contract negotiations with internal/external/national/international partners
    • creation of mandatory project documentation, such as procedures, handbooks, test specifications and protocols for later operations. Interface function for in-orbit and ground tests as well as technical expert for anomaly resolution.
    • trade-off between available standards, e.g. Galileo Software Standard, European Cooperation for Space Standardization and DLR Standards
Supervision of technical and development environment
    • transforming theoretical electrical needs in technical parameters
    • analyses and creation of integrated circuits on the basis of earlier developed concepts (e.g. FPGA development) and definition of statement of works for suppliers
    • calculation, selection and integration of sensors, verified on ground, for operating and maintaining the system
    • conduct of dimensioning, build and operating od development environment as well as testing the electronics
    • support of other related groups for so called System Compatibility Test Campaigns (SCTC) and simulations
    • selection of suitable industrial partners for conducting tests by use of external facilities, for instance for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and susceptibility
Tasks across and beyond project related work
    • the employee will actively participate to the DLR employee development and follow current scientific development
    • publication of results in adequate manner, e.g. releasing papers or presentations in scientific forums
    • when possible aiding the DLR educational mandate by supervision of Master and Bachelor students
    Your qualifications:
    • Master degree in electrical or telecommunications engineering or similar
    • experience in transfer of scientific and theoretical basics into real hard- and software
    • Minimum 3 years of experience in development of integrated circuits and testing thereof. Ideally in connection to frequency combs and/or optical data transfer.
    • high degree of personal responsibility in former or current position for selecting the required tools and environment as well as defining and conducting the required tests for qualification
    • experience in use of suitable software for design and testing with radio frequency test equipment
    • knowledge in MATLAB and/or C+/++/Python
    • fluent in English (spoken and written)
    • willingness for occasional business trips, mostly in Germany
    • willingness to apply for security clearance
    • ideally experience in the field of AIT (Assembly, Integration and Testing) as well as related Hard- and Software, e.g. SCOEs (Satellite Check-Out Equipment) or EGSEs (Electrical Ground Support Equipment)
    • experience with Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS) and associated technical needs for electronics thereof in space is an asset
    • experience in high frequency technology, e.g. high frequency signal generation and antennas welcome
    Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x).
