At DLR's Institute of Communications and Navigation (KN), reliable navigation systems are being developed for safety-critical applications that will enable the automatic landing or precision approach of aircraft and drones as well as the reliable operation of automated vehicles and trains in the future.

Satellite navigation technology (GPS and Galileo, or in general GNSS) is an essential component together withmodern augmentation systems, such as Advanced Receiver Autonomous Integrity Monitoring ( ARAIM).

In order to enable safe operations, the proper functioning of satellite navigation systems (especially Galileo) must be analyzed and verified. Errors have to be characterized and appropriate integrity concepts for robust positioning (such as Advanced RAIM) have to be developed.

High accurate satellite navigation concepts and solutions such as Real Time Kinematic (RTK) or Precise Point Positioning (PPP) are required for the operation of automated vehicles and drones. However, new integrity concepts for these algorithms still need to be developed for their use in safety-critical applications.

Is this field of research of your interest? Then come to work with us on the next generation of satellite navigation systems. Bring your scientific skills, your commitment and your team-oriented spirit to the research area outlined above. Furthermore, you will represent our new integrity concepts in international expert and standardization groups and take the lead in national and international projects in cooperation with our research teams and partners.

Based on your knowledge and experience, you will contribute to the continuous expansion of the institute's expertise. You are characterized by your enthusiasm for science, your creative drive and your skills in dealing with our employees and project partners from a wide range of nations. You will take advantage of opportunities for further training in the scientific and project management fields and can draw on our broad range of educational opportunities.

  • scientific university degree (Master) Degree in aerospace engineering, communications engineering, physics or a comparable field with excellent grades
  • many years of relevant professional research experience in the field of reliable satellite navigation, typically supported by a doctorate degree
  • in-depth knowledge in the field of satellite navigation (GPS, Galileo, EGNOS)
  • expert knowledge in the field of high accuracy GNSS solutions (RTK, PPP), integrity concepts and integrity monitoring (ARAIM or SBAS)
  • in-depth knowledge in the field of statistical data processing
  • proven technical excellence in the field of reliable navigation, for example demonstrated by prizes or awards
  • experience in project work in an international environment
  • ability to prepare technical reports
  • extensive experience in participation in international committees (expert and standardization groups) on the subject area of reliable aeronautical navigation
  • extensive programming skills in a high-level programming language (C, C++, Matlab, Python)
  • excellent command of both written and spoken English

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
