For our location in Zeuthen we are seeking:

Instrument Scientist (Gamma Rays and UV) in Astroparticle Physics

Limited: 2 years with an option to extend | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: APPO014/2023 | Deadline: open | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

DESY at its Zeuthen location is a key partner and contributor of the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), the leading future gamma-ray observatory. The group is furthermore engaged in ULTRASAT, a future space mission that will map the ultraviolet sky to search for transient sources.

For CTAO, we are co-developing the simulation and reconstruction pipeline and are a lead contributor to the online software work package. We are leading the construction of the Medium-Sized Telescopes, and are co-developing the camera of the Small-Sized Telescopes. For ULTRASAT, we are developing, producing, and testing the CMOS UV camera of the satellite. There are multiple positions open.

About your role:

Depending on the actual position tasks include:

  • Contribute to instrument development, construction, commissioning (CTAO, ULTRASAT)
  • Contribute to the management and coordination of instrument construction projects and measurement campaigns
  • Analyse CTAO construction array data
  • Contribute to the development of CTAO software
  • Supervision of technicians and engineers towards production according to specifications
  • Supervise students
