For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

PhD Position: Method Development for Hierachical X-Ray Imaging at Synchrotron Facilities

Limited: 2 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FSDO016/2025 | Deadline: open | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

We are seeking two motivated PhD candidates to develop a novel multi-scale imaging method at synchrotron radiation facilities, particularly PETRA III at DESY. Samples, be they biological or from materials science, often have a hierarchical structure that determines their function. It is not feasible to scan the full volume of such samples at the highest desired resolution. Therefore, we require an imaging scheme that acquires relevant features at different length scales and integrates them into a single reconstruction volume. The PhD projects aim to develop and implement this novel local adaptive tomography (LAT) scheme, which will allow us to efficiently measure and reconstruct hierarchically organised samples. To achieve this, we need to improve our understanding of the physical image formation and data recovery processes, among other topics. The advertised positions will focus on these topics. One position is in the "X-Ray Nanoscience and X-Ray Optics" group and the other is in the "Computational Imaging" group. The PhD projects are embedded in the frame of the ErUM data project CmarT.

About your role:

  • Develop improved physical models of the image formation process in holographic X-ray imaging
  • Design and implement reconstruction algorithms for handling large-scale tomographic data from limited field-of-view acquisitions
  • Collaborate with beamline scientists to validate and optimize the LAT scheme
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours and variable part-time. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Limited: 2 years

About you:

  • Master's degree in Physics/Mathematics/Computer Science or related subject
  • Willingness to familiarise yourself in depth with new topics in the fringe area between algorithm development, high performance computing and experiment
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Willingness to work in teams
  • Good knowledge of a programming language
  • Good communication skills in English/German

DESY in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the University of Hamburg. Candidates for thesis research will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the University of Hamburg. PhD students receive a monthly salary of 75% of the payment of the remuneration group 13 TVöD (Federal Government).
