    Your Role and Responsibilities

The goal of this internship in to work on hybrid compiler/assembler methods for AI accelerators supporting high-level programming constructs in heterogeneous multicore architectures to efficiently support the development and mapping of novel AI algorithms.

Specifically, this work is about extending a specific assembler tool with compilation functions that support high-level language constructs like for(....) { }, if(...) { } else { } in a hybrid approach and automatically map to the very specific instruction sets of the accelerator architecture.
This includes mapping to internal loop and address registers, generation of branch addresses and nested loops, and mapping to the set of possible branch conditions. Optionally, this can be extended to an automatic design space exploration to find the optimal strategy and the most suitable instruction combinations for e.g. implementation of conditional and dynamic nested loops at compile time.
Your work will contribute to the efficient generation of assembly code for AI accelerators, the reusability of code constructs and the flagging of errors with clear messages; and you are more than welcome to contribute further ideas.
You will be working in an international agile, fun and thoughtful team. This internship can be done in an home-office setup and is therefore not tied to a physical location. To make this efficient we use a range of collaboration tools for video conferencing, virtual whiteboards, team messaging, document sharing and other cloud-based services.

With around 1500 employees, the IBM Research & Development GmbH is the largest european laboratory in the global IBM network. The hardware development division there has some 200 engineers working on key components for the IBM Z, POWER and Quantum computers. These build the foundation for cloud computing, machine learning, AI, big data and analytics at the heart of every enterprise workloads.

    Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a disruptive topic across the technology landscape taking a large momentum at both the software level and the hardware level. One approach to meet the high performance requirements is to develop and integrate specialized hardware accelerators close to the data. These novel accelerator architectures achieve high efficiency by being application-specific and tailored to AI algorithms. However, the programming models and instruction-set are not standardized, so one cannot rely on off-the-shelf compilation technologies.
    Required Technical and Professional Expertise

    • Kenntnisse in LLVM, Python, optional Assembler
    • Grundkenntnisse in Rechnerarchitekturen
    • sehr gute Englischkenntnisse (C-level)
    • gute Deutschkenntnisse (B-level)
    Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
    • Interesse an AI / Machine Learning
    • Interesse an agilen Entwurfsmethoden
