    Launched in April 2018, the Dreadnought Programme will be delivered under the Alliance construct formed between the Ministry of Defence's Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. The Alliance was formed as a result of recommendations outlined in the Strategic Defence and Security Review to harness effective working relationships between MoD and industrial partners to improve performance.

    A new opportunity has arisen for a Structural Engineer to join the Submarines team in Derby, Barrow or Bristol

    The Structural Engineer supports the nuclear component design process by defining, conducting and reviewing stress, fatigue, fracture and other lifing analyses of proposed design solutions to ensure that they are robust and meet requirements.

    You shall exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical analysis methodologies and have an understanding of cross-discipline engineering concepts, which include but are not limited to; manufacturing engineering, service, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, product definition, and materials behaviour.

    Our nuclear business is a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority, managing all aspects of plant design, safety, manufacture, performance and through-life support

    Key Accountabilities:

    • An understanding of pressure hull / vessel design and construction techniques.
    • Appreciation of and interpretation of welding and NDE techniques and results.
    • Development of safety arguments to ensure relative hazards are substantiated.
    • Understanding of structural analysis methods including Finite Element Analysis.

    Key Experiences and any Qualifications

    • Qualified to degree level or equivalent, UK CEng (Chartered Engineer) or other national equivalent.
    • Experience of Technical Requirements, Evaluation & Acceptance.
    • Experience of maritime build quality assurance activities and acceptance processes.
    • Will also hold professional registration as an Engineering Technician/ Incorporated or Chartered Engineer or be willing to obtain this within 12 months.
    • Technical experience relevant to the engineering discipline and commensurate with grade level.
    • An ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems
    • Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.

    To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a minimum of an Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.

    Due to the nature of work the Business conducts and the protection of certain assets a person has to be a UK national or in MoD approved cases a Dual National from a non ITAR country.
