PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

With the SAP HANA® database, SAP has created a completely new database technology for the current generation of business applications that combines transactional and analytical data processing. The in-memory computing technology can store data in rows or columns, resulting in higher performance and higher data compression rates. Its standard semantic data model enables SQL access and supports domain-specific language. Multicore processors and a distributed architecture enable SAP HANA to scale incredibly well. And it’s all from SAP, one of Europe’s leading software manufacturers.

Team: CALC - CalculationEngine & Deployment: CalculationEngine & Deployment are responsible to provide analytical clients an interface for analytical workflows. This incorporates metadata handling as well as query optimization (relational, non-relational, domain specific) and query execution.

A key aspect of the HANA database is the option to push computations down into the database. These computations are resembled by so-called calculation views, which are processed by the calculation engine (CE). The CE draws from many other features of the database and thereby acts as an orchestration layer connecting different functionalities. This fact, however, implies that the CE is quite a complex piece of software.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

The calculation engine has a large codebase. It is a continuing challenge to mitigate the side effects of having a great feature portfolio. Henceforth, in this project, measures for code improvements shall be defined and executed.
Tasks for the student (f/m/d):

• Understanding some of the key HANA components
• Understanding the relevant code and the development workflow
• Refactoring and rewriting code
• Writing tests and small features
• Ideally helping to drive informed design decisions

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

• Student (f/m/d) at a university or a university of applied sciences
• Preferred fields of study: STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)
• Computer skills: good C/C++ coding skills, Working knowledge of Databases and SQL
• Language skills: English
• Soft skills: Conscientiousness, ability to handle complexity
• Others: Experience with Linux, Python, and Git is not required but is a plus
