Area Manager, Maintenance & HSE
Hawkesbury, Ontario

Summary:

The incumbent in this position is responsible for managing two key functions within the plant: the mechanical maintenance of equipment and the health, safety and environment (HSE). The person in this role supervises technical teams, plans maintenance projects, manages capital investments (CAPEX), and ensures the proper functioning of facilities. In parallel, they act as the HSE leader for all employees, including managers, unionized staff, and contractors. They administer the HSE management system, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote a proactive culture of safety, prevention, and operational reliability.

Responsibilities:

Leadership and management

  • Supervise daily operations related to both maintenance and HSE, ensuring performance, safety, and compliance.
  • Foster cross-departmental collaboration (production, quality, engineering, HR).
  • Evaluate employee performance, support skills development, and ensure succession planning.
  • Contribute to site-wide strategic planning, resource optimization, and achievement of plant objectives.

Maintenance

  • Develop, plan, and oversee preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Manage equipment-related capital investment (CAPEX) projects, including budgeting, purchasing, coordination, and execution.
  • Direct repair and maintenance activities for all buildings, equipment, and machinery.
  • Coordinate the work of mechanical teams (millwrights, machinists, subcontractors) and establish intervention priorities.
  • Participate in production meetings and ensure alignment with operational needs.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team on project planning, parts procurement, technical specifications, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the quality of technical interventions, accurate documentation of work orders, and analysis of critical failures.
  • Use digital tools (JDE, ADP, etc.) for planning, tracking, and resource management.

Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Act as the leader of the plant’s HSE program, with full responsibility for the HSE management system.
  • Oversee compliance with all applicable occupational health and safety laws, standards, and regulations, ensuring documentation is up to date.
  • Plan and deliver mandatory safety training sessions (WHMIS, confined space, working at heights, etc.).
  • Review HSE performance indicators (KPIs) and implement targeted preventive measures.
  • Conduct incident investigations and ensure timely follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Regularly engage with employees to raise awareness of hazards and strengthen collective safety engagement.
  • Guide both management and unionized employees in consistently applying HSE policies.
  • Actively participate in the Health & Safety Committee and ensure open communication on HSE priorities.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience, with a minimum of 5 years in maintenance and HSE in an industrial setting.
  • Possess a strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, including variable frequency drives (VFDs), to support accurate diagnostics, effective coordination of interventions, and tailored technical support.
  • Proven leadership and interpersonal skills for effective team collaboration.
  • Solid abilities in analysis, organization, problem-solving, and project management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both French and English.
  • Proficiency in statistical tools and performance indicators.
  • Dynamic, motivated, and comfortable facing challenges in a fast-evolving environment.
