For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Laser engineer photocathode and heater laser operations

Unlimited / | Start: 01.09.2025 | ID: MMA023/2025 | Deadline: 30.07.2025 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Laser Science and Technology Group at DESY is expanding due to an increased demand on ultrafast laser technology, which is key to a large variety of research efforts at DESY. High power, high repetition rate ultrafast lasers are essential for generating and manipulating the electron beams and for most of the science experiments at the X-Ray Free Electron Laser facilities FLASH and European XFEL. At DESY, we are operating several ultrafast laser systems 24/7 with excellent availability. Our team focuses on the development of novel ultrafast high-power laser systems covering the spectral range from ultraviolet to mid-infrared. We develop in-house laser diagnostics and controls, laser beam transport and focusing to the optical interaction point. To strengthen our team and to lead the FLASH photocathode and laser heater operations we are seeking a laser engineer.

About your role:

  • Lead operations, maintenance and sustaining engineering of the FLASH photocathode and laser heater laser system
  • Continuously improve the FLASH photocathode and laser heater laser systems for high stability and availability
  • Develop laser documentation and training materials
  • Troubleshoot laser system failures, analyze failure modes and improve availability of laser systems
  • Support collaboration projects with accelerator physicists for accelerator operation and accelerator research and development
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Unlimited /

About you:

  • Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, chemistry or equivalent qualification
  • Strong knowledge and experience in ultrafast lasers and ultrafast optics
  • Experience in laser maintenance and operations
  • Knowledge of accelerator physics is a plus
  • Excellent English skills
  • Experience in laser design, laser simulation and CAD design is a plus
  • Experience in control system integration and knowledge of Python programming is a plus
