In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists. The "ErUM-WAVE" project aims to develop algorithms to predict the impact of seismic wave fields propagating in the earth. The complex 3-dimensional wave field challenge is tackled using powerful machine learning techniques based on modern neuronal network architectures, and a distributed fiber optic sensing network comprised of thousands of seismic detectors installed on the DESY campus. Focus of the PhD position is to identify, evaluate and predict seismic waves i.e. originating from earthquakes, ocean waves, traffic or mechanical perturbations, and their influence on DESY’s accelerators. The ErUM-WAVE project is carried out in collaboration with several leading institutes and universities in the field of machine learning and geophysics (Universities Hamburg, Münster, Aachen and Wuppertal). About your role: Development and verification of machine learning algorithms to predict 3-dimensional waves High-end data analysis and computing on our high-performance IT-cluster Development of innovative data analysis tools with theory researcher groups Being part in an international team of scientists to improve environmental control for next-generation accelerators Presentation of results in international conferences Supervise master's theses and work with students Good reasons to join: Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus.
