    In the framework of different atmospheric missions (cf. GOME-2, and the EU Copernicus Missions Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P), Sentinel-4, Sentinel-5) DLR’s Remote Sensing Technology Institute develops algorithms for the accurate derivation of ozone and other trace gases (e.g. NO2, SO2, HCHO, CHOCHO) as well as physical aerosol and cloud properties from satellite data obtained with GOME- and OMI-type atmospheric spectrometers. These algorithms are used operationally in near-real-time processing systems of ESA, EUMETSAT and the DLR AC-SAF. At the end of 2017, the TROPOMI instrument was launched on board the EU/ESA Copernicus satellite S5P, followed in 2018 by the third GOME-2 sensor on EUMETSAT's MetOp-C platform.

    The Remote Sensing Technology Institute has many years of experience in deriving atmospheric products from satellite measurements ranging from GOME/ERS-2, SCIAMACHY/ENVISAT, GOME-2/METOP to TROPOMI/S5P and continuing in the future with the Copernicus Sentinel missions Sentinel-4 and Sentinel-5 (see e.g. https://atmos.eoc.dlr.de/tropomi/ and https://atmos.eoc.dlr.de/gome2/).

    The work is performed in close cooperation with national and international partners. We offer an excellent working environment and the opportunity to collaborate with the leading scientists in the field of satellite-based remote sensing of the atmosphere.

    The holder of the position will be responsible for the following tasks:

    • development of novel and refinement of existing scientific algorithms for the retrieval of trace gas columns, for example for ozone, NO2, SO2, H2O, Formaldehyde (HCHO), BrO and Glyoxal (CHOCHO), using GOME- and OMI-type instruments, here especially for GOME-2 and the EU Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor and Sentinel-4 atmospheric sensors
    • integration of the algorithms in pre-operational software and operational processors  
    • verification, validation and documentation of the results
    • publication of results in peer-reviewed journals
    • presentation of results in project meetings and at international conferences
    • completed scientific university studies (university diploma/master's degree) in physics or a related
    • PhD in physics or a related
    • several years of experience in the field of atmospheric remote sensing, esp. using data from the sensor types GOME-2, OMI and TROPOMI
    • very good knowledge in the retrieval of trace gas concentrations using UV/VIS/NIR spectrometers, esp. using the DOAS technique and radiative transfer modeling, as demonstrated by scientific publications
    • solid knowledge in methods of numerical mathematics
    • very good programming experience with C/C++, Fortran or Python under Linux/Unix
    • good command of English
    • team spirit
