For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientist as postdoctoral researcher in plasma source development

Remuneration Group 13 | Limited: 3 years | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: MMA015/2023 | Deadline: until position is filled | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

Particle accelerators based on novel plasma technology are promising to positively disrupt a multitude of accelerator-based applications in the health sector, industry, and fundamental research. Given their high-potential for impact in society at-large, plasma accelerators form a cornerstone of the DESY accelerator research and development strategy. This advanced accelerator concept leverages extreme fields in the GV/m-range, which exceed those achievable with traditional radiofrequency accelerators by orders of magnitude. As a consequence, plasma-based particle accelerators are the key to the miniaturization of today's large-scale accelerator installations and to the future deployment of compact, mobile systems. DESY advances all facets of beam- and laser-driven plasma accelerators with a focus on programmatic R&D toward high-average-power, stable beams and developing frontier technologies to deliver on the potential of plasma-based particle acceleration. The Plasma Accelerator Group (MPA) invites candidates to apply for a postdoctoral position to work on laser-driven plasma acceleration experiments at DESY. This role will focus on the development of key technologies related to plasma sources operating in the multi-GeV range e.g. optical shaping of plasma waveguides, controlled injection, development of novel diagnostics for lasers, plasmas and electrons. The successful candidate will be part of the Plasma Accelerator Group and will work closely with group members and external collaborators.

About your role:

  • Develop novel plasma source technology for multi-GeV electron acceleration
  • Design and execute experiments on the high-power laser systems at DESY
  • Record, analyse and document results for communication through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences and workshops
  • Contribute to the supervision of students and work closely with other members of the plasma accelerator community at DESY and with external collaborators
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. We attach particular importance to appreciative cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work. You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

Limited: 3 years

About you:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent qualification
  • Background in the field of laser-plasma physics or plasma accelerators
  • Experience with the design and operation of high-power laser-plasma experiments
  • Experience with the use of plasma waveguides is preferred
  • Working proficiency with a standard scientific programming language (Python/Matlab/C++ etc.)
  • Ability to both work independently and to work as part of a team
