    The Department of Nautical Systems at the Institute of Communication and Navigation in Neustrelitz is involved, among other things, in the development of a receiver for R-Mode signals transmitted by marine radio beacons in the frequency range around 300 kHz. The current developments of the receiver are based on a Python implementation using a Software Defined Radio (SDR).

    The goal of your work with us is to expand the current R-Mode receiver platform. To do this, you will familiarise yourself with the R-Mode system and the R-Mode receiver so that you are able to implement some parts of the current receiver in hardware.

    In addition to your work with us, which should have a time frame of 20 hours per week, we also offer you the opportunity to write your master's thesis with us in parallel.

    Your tasks:

    • identification of logical parts of the processing chain that can be implemented on the hardware in the FPGA of the SDR
    • implementation of the identified functions in VHDL and testing with an available SDR
    • adaptation of the DLR R-mode software receiver to the new capabilities of the SDR
    • carrying out calibrations and measurements
    • comparison of the performance of the pure software solution, with the solution partially implemented in hardware
    • ongoing Master's degree in the field of communications engineering / electrical engineer
    • knowledge of the Python programming language
    • basic understanding of digital signal processing
    • experience with VHDL
    • independent and structured way of working
    • good to very good knowledge of written and spoken English
    • ability to work in a team and reliability
