Summary:

The Production Manager – Mechanical Shop is a leadership team position responsible for overseeing all facets of production operations, ensuring efficient and safe manufacturing, maintenance, and repair of rolls and related mechanical components. This leader is tasked with boosting productivity, upholding high-quality standards, streamlining workflows, and managing a team of skilled technicians and operators. A critical focus of this role is scheduling and coordinating work to maximize work center efficiency while meeting customer lead time requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily production activities within the roll shop to meet output and quality targets. This includes working closely with the cover shop manager to coordinate work flow between departments.
  • Develop, implement, and adjust production schedules that optimize work center efficiency while ensuring customer lead time requirements are consistently met.
  • Monitor and analyze production metrics, identifying opportunities for process improvement and cost reduction.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance department to ensure all equipment and machinery are properly maintained and in safe working condition.
  • Lead, train, and motivate staff while fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and quality to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, maintenance, and safety activities.
  • Oversee inventory management of materials, tooling, and finished goods within the roll shop.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and other applicable safety standards.
  • Drive the implementation of lean manufacturing practices and process standardization.
  • Demonstrate safety leadership through attending safety talks, performing safety observations and risk assessments and working with the HSE site manager to promote safety improvement initiatives.
  • Emphasize quality of work by ensuring that tasks are completed as specified. Work with the site quality manager to audit processes and finished products, investigate NCRs, complaints and claims and ensure that corrective actions are completed to prevent recurrence.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Industrial Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • At least 5 years of experience in a supervisory or managerial role within a mechanical or heavy manufacturing environment; roll shop experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of roll shop equipment, machinery, and production processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to schedule and coordinate resources efficiently to meet production and customer demands.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to manage and develop a diverse team.
  • Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies is a plus.
  • Proficient with MS Office and production management software; SAP or equivalent ERP experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is performed in a heavy industrial environment with exposure to noise, heat, and moving machinery.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move throughout the production area for extended periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs may be required.
  • PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) must be worn as required.
