For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientific Researcher for the MorphoSphere project

Limited: 31.10.2028 | Start: earliest possible | ID: FHMA035/2025 | Deadline: 17.12.2025 | Full-time/Part-time | Remote work possible

DESY, with more than 2900 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

MorphoSphere develops a powerful data management architecture for a distributed, smart and interactive Storage & Analysis Repository of Digitized Morphology as a pilot project for integrative data platforms within the triangle of the data generating (photon, neutron or ion) user facilities (PNI facilities), large scale data facilities (LSDF), high-performance computing (HPC) systems and specific scientific communities. It aims to optimize not only management of data transfer, processing and storage but also computational analysis, visualization and public availability, thereby significantly promoting scientific output.

Together with project partner and stakeholders from a larger collaboration, the successful candidate will develop a sustainable management of distributed large-scale scientific data in a storage/data lake. Moreover an interface between computing resources and distributed data storage needs to be created. In the context of this position an efficient data organization and reduction for fast and transparent access to the underlying compressed data including data processing pipeline has to be enabled.

About your role:

  • Development and testing of an innovative and federated research platform for large-scale analysis of distributed data sets of imaging research data from Photon Science facilities
  • Efficiency and performance measurements as well as optimization within the context of a prototype/demonstrator
  • Contribution to the development of concepts for energy efficient job and data distribution on local and centre overarching computing environments
  • Collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
  • Publication and presentation of research results
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket (Deutschland-Ticket) at both locations.

Limited: 31.10.2028

About you:

  • Successfully completed university degree (masters and/or PhD) in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related field
  • Practical experience with scientific data analyses and the relevant tools
  • Knowledge in scientific federated computing environments
  • Practical experience in Python or any modern programming language
  • Experience with research software engineering practices (git, unit testing, containers)
  • First experience with HPC / code optimization is desirable
  • Experience with experimental research methods for universe and matter is a plus
  • Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Autonomous working methods and abilities to conceptualize software related research work
