For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Scientist for energy efficient scientific IT infrastructures

Limited: 31.12.2026 | Starting date: earliest possible | ID: FHMA037/2023 | Deadline: 20.05.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The DESY IT group offers general IT services for all DESY divisions, and operates large scale IT infrastructures for scientific data management and analysis for DESY and European-XFEL research.

The EU project "Research Facilities 2.0" aims at making large scientific infrastructures and institutes more sustainable. The methods developped and used within the project should also be of use outside of the project, and therefore have a large influence on society.

The overarching goal is to improve our understanding of the scope-2 emissions (mostly usage of electricity from non renewable resources), develop ways for their longterm, massive reduction, as well as a reducing scope-3 emissions using adequate operational models.
As one of two positions dedicated to the "Resarch Facilities 2.0" project, you are integrated into teams working on scientific computing within DESY IT while being in contact with other DESY groups as well as the other European partners of the project.

About your role:

  • You analyse the usage pattern of the scientific compute and storage infrastructures
  • You propose and integrate optimisations to the scheduling system of the scientific compute clusters
  • You define relevant observables, and implement their measurement
  • You communicate and coordinate with relevant experts from DESY particle physics and photon science experiments, as well as with external partners
  • You will participate and contribute to workshops and conferences in the context of the "Research Facilities 2.0" project
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

Limited: 31.12.2026

About you:

  • You have completed a master's degree in computer science, physics, energy science, or related subject, or comparable knowledge.
  • You are an experienced user of Linux based computer networks.
  • You have basic knowledge of compute clusters and scheduling mechanisms.
  • You have experience with modern computer hardware and metrics collection.
  • You are a team player, like traveling, and enjoy working in large international teams
  • You have good spoken and written command of the English and German languages
