For our location in Hamburg we are seeking:

Research Scientist in Biofilm-Imaging

Limited: 2 years | Starting date: 01.07.2024 | ID: FSMA021/2024 | Deadline: 29.05.2024 | Full-time/Part-time

DESY, with more than 3000 employees at its two locations in Hamburg and Zeuthen, is one of the world's leading research centres. Its research focuses on decoding the structure and function of matter, from the smallest particles of the universe to the building blocks of life. In this way, DESY contributes to solving the major questions and urgent challenges facing science, society and industry. With its ultramodern research infrastructure, its interdisciplinary research platforms and its international networks, DESY offers a highly attractive working environment in the fields of science, technology and administration as well as for the education of highly qualified young scientists.

The Center for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) is an international, interdisciplinary research center on the DESY campus where scientists from nine different university and non-university institutions work together to investigate the structure, dynamics and function of pathogens and their host interactions. The DESY-group 'Structural Microbiology' uses structural and functional approaches to study bacterial signaling and biofilm formation, capitalizing on the brilliant X-ray sources on the DESY campus, including PETRA III and its beamlines for structural biology and imaging. We are looking for a motivated Research Scientist for a third-party funded project within a German-Swedish collaboration. The successful candidate will establish novel workflows for the hierarchical imaging of bacterial biofilms and apply these to fundamental biological questions.

About your role:

  • Establish new approaches for biofilm imaging using synchrotron radiation
  • Apply complementary approaches (e.g., electron and light microscopy)
  • Develop experimental systems for the study of bacterial biofilm formation
  • Preparation and publishing of scientific research
  • Promotion and support of scientific projects related to biofilm imaging experiments
Good reasons to join:

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

Limited: 2 years

About you:

  • PhD in Biology (Microbiology, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry or Biophysics) or equivalent education in the natural sciences
  • Demonstrated track record in the field of study, supported by publications in leading, peer-reviewed journals
  • Foundational and applied knowledge in microbiology, biological imaging, and/or X-ray scattering
  • High level of independence and motivation
  • Willingness to participate in an interdisciplinary, international research collaboration
  • Excellence in research and communication skills in the English language
