Studien-/ Abschlussarbeit
Enter the fascinating world of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and help shape the future through research and innovation! We offer an exciting and inspiring working environment driven by the expertise and curiosity of our 11,000 employees from 100 nations and our unique infrastructure. Together, we develop sustainable technologies and thus contribute to finding solutions to global challenges. Would you like to join us in addressing this major future challenge? Then this is your place!
For our Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³)  in Trauen we are looking for
Aerospace Engineer, Physicist, Mechanical Engineer or similar (f/m/x)
Design of solid rocket motors to reduce dispersion of sounding rockets through spin-up motors
What to expect:
The proposed Master’s thesis will be conducted in the launch segment of the Responsive Space Cluster Competence Center (RSC³) of the DLR in Trauen. The RSC³ develops and demonstrates key technologies that make it feasible to equip small satellites with payloads in the shortest possible time, to place them into a Low-Earth Orbit and to contribute to the critical infrastructure space. The launch segment department deals with:
  • the design and further development of ground and airborne launch systems, launch facilities and ground infrastructure.
  • the design, further development and performance enhancement of propulsion systems for Responsive Space launcher systems, including testing and validation with ground test facilities.
  • the design, further development and performance enhancement of upper stages for the precise placement of small satellites in orbit and technology demonstration.
Sounding rockets are sub-orbital rockets launched to conduct experiments in micro-gravity and to test flight hardware. During the ascent phase, the sounding rocket is set in rotation along its longitudinal axis by inclined fins and by spin up motors (SUM) mounted to the boost adapters between stages. The SUMs are small solid rocket motors that induce a torque and reduce the dispersion of uncontrolled multi-stage rocket systems. The task is to develop and design SUM concepts to fulfil the requirements of potential customers.
The following points during the thesis will be addressed:
1. Literature review and identification of the current state of the art.
2. Development of a python tool to estimate motor performance (e.g., thrust profile, mass, burn time, diameter, length, solid propellant composition) based on changing input.
3. Identification of most promising motor configuration for SUMs.
4. Modelling of the chosen configuration(s) in CAD software (Catia V5)
5. Design and modelling of a suitable test bench concept.
6. Analysis of results; recommendations for further action.
What we expect from you:
  • Background in Aerospace Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Enthusiasm for space engineering
  • Programming skills in Python and/or Catia V5
  • (Basic) knowledge on rocket propulsion
  • Structured and independent work style
  • Very good knowledge of English and/or German
What we offer:
DLR stands for diversity, appreciation and equality for all people. We promote independent work and the individual development of our employees both personally and professionally. To this end, we offer numerous training and development opportunities. Equal opportunities are of particular importance to us, which is why we want to increase the proportion of women in science and management in particular. Applicants with severe disabilities will be given preference if they are qualified.
